Climate Change and Neurological Health: Impacts and Interventions
The lack of research on the relationship between climate change and the incidence, prevalence and severity of neurological disorders poses significant challenges in understanding and addressing this issue. This Topic Collection in BMJ Neurology Open aims to raise awareness, promote research, and gather empirical data on how climate change impacts on neurological health.

Anthropogenic climate change poses significant threats to human health, including neurological. While evidence suggests that climate change will undermine neurological health, there is a lack of research in this area, with limited data, methodological disparities, and a lack of consideration for regional influences and population genetics. These gaps hinder our ability to fully grasp the extent of climate change impacts on neurological health. The urgent need for robust studies in this area is underscored by the potential ramifications of neglecting neurological health in the face of climate change. Addressing this gap is crucial for informing policy decisions and implementing effective mitigation strategies.
This Topic Collection aims to raise awareness of climate change impacts on neurological health, promote research and provide empirical data, including on adaptation measures. We welcome contributions that explore the relationship between changing climate patterns and the incidence, prevalence, and severity of neurological disorders.
We invite researchers, clinicians, and policymakers to contribute to this critical discussion and help shape our collective response to the present threat of climate-induced neurological health challenges. Potential topics for submission (this is not a comprehensive list):
- The impact of temperature extremes, diurnal temperature fluctuations, and extreme weather events on neurological disorders
- Regional disparities in neurological health outcomes in the context of climate change
- Strategies for reducing the neurological health effects of climate change
- The role of public health interventions in addressing climate-related neurological risks
- Strategies to communicate risk and influence neurological health policies
Please see the instructions for authors for submission requirements for each article type. To submit your article, please follow these instructions and select ‘Climate Change and Neurological Health: Impacts and Interventions’ as the Topic Collection.
All submitted articles will be subject to the journal's normal peer review process. The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for the content of this Topic Collection. Guest Editors will manage peer review, invite reviewers and make a recommendation, but the final decision on all manuscripts will be made by the Editor-in-Chief.
Articles accepted for publication will be published upon acceptance. Visit our author hub for more information regarding the publication process for topic collections.
